Christine Ruggiero, Founder of Beyond Awareness

I was always a person who got annual mammograms—until Covid caused me and many others to miss two years of crucial screenings. In the fall of 2022, I discovered a lump in my breast. One week later, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, the first in my family to receive such a diagnosis. I was completely in the dark about what my next step would be. I used any resource I could find to decide on which hospital worked best for me, and thankfully, my hospital provided a list of doctors in my area.
I was very fortunate to find the best match for me, and within a month of my diagnosis, I had my mastectomy scheduled.

After my mastectomy, I began to navigate life post-op, which I quickly learned was quite costly.
During my recovery, I learned that a post-op mastectomy bra was not just cosmetic but also a necessity for my body’s recovery. The emotional satisfaction I felt when I tried on these specially designed bras and prostheses was immeasurable, as this simple act restored a sense of balance in my life, both literally and metaphorically. However, when the bill arrived for these essential items, I was struck by the stark realization that being able to afford them was a privilege. Not everyone had the means to access the same level of care and support I had been fortunate enough to receive. It was at that moment that I knew that I wanted to extend a helping hand to others, ensuring that no one would feel restricted or limited due to a lack of financial assistance.

Motivated by this newfound purpose, I founded Beyond Awareness, an organization committed to filling the gaps left by insurance coverage. Our mission is to provide the necessary support and resources for those in need, ensuring that they can access the post-operative bras, prostheses, and other vital items that aid in their physical and emotional well-being. It is our fervent belief that no one should have to bear the burden of these expenses alone, empowering individuals to heal and thrive without financial limitations.

Thank you for being a part of this.
